First Minister Humza Yousaf yesterday told of his relief as his parents-in-law arrived in Scotland from Gaza.
Mr Yousaf, 38, shared online a family photo which included his wife Nadia and her parents Elizabeth and Maged El-Nakla.
The El-Naklas, from Dundee, were among 92 Britons allowed to pass through the Rafah border crossing into Egypt on
Friday morning.
They were visiting relatives in Gaza when the conflict with Israel erupted. Mr Yousaf, who has told how the couple had to drink seawater amid horrific conditions, said: “I am pleased to say my in-laws are safe and back home.
“We are, of course, elated, but my father-in-law said ‘My heart is broken in two – and with my mum, son and grandchildren in Gaza’.
“He then broke down, telling me how hard it was saying goodbye to them.”
Mr Yousaf’s daughters Amal, four, and Maya, 14, are seen in the photo along with other family members.
The First Minister’s brother-in-law is a doctor who is currently treating the wounded in Gaza.
Other relatives who remain in Gaza include the grandmother of Nadia.
Mr Yousaf is calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, saying a “humanitarian pause” would not be an acceptable response to the thousands being killed.
