Huge fire engulfs Leicester shopping centre with plumes of smoke filling the skies


A major fire has broken out in Leicester this morning as members of the public report large clouds of smoke in the air.

Police have advised locals to avoid the streets in the city centre this morning, with reports of the fire starting in Belgrave Gate.

The streets are currently closed to pedestrians and people have been urged to close their windows.

Footage shows thick black smoke pouring out into the city centre.

There is also an Incident Response Unit belonging to the East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) at the scene.

There is also no access to shops along Belgrave Gate as firefighters tackled the blaze, reports LeicestershireLive.

According to Leicestershire Fire Control, six fire crews are at the scene. They tweeted: “Leics Fire Service dealing with a shop unit involved on Belgrave Gate in the city centre. 6 appliances in attendance.”
