Huge fire breaks out in Birmingham causing chaos as smoke billows over city

Fire fighters are tackling a brutal blaze ripping through a yard in the West Midlands, as local residents have been advised to shut their windows to avoid inhaling the smoke. The huge fire continues to burn fiercely on Alum Rock Road in Saltley, with the billowing smoke visible from Birmingham city centre.

According to Birmingham Live: “Around five fire trucks are on the scene and crews are attempting to douse the flames.

At this moment, it looks like a large pile of fly-tipped rubbish has caught ablaze. Crews are using jets to control the flames.”

Alum Rock Road has been closed to the public, with traffic trapped between police cordons.

An eye witness told Birmingham Live: “It was about 4.20pm and there was lots of smoke. It started small and then got bigger and bigger.”

The man, who works near the site of the fire, continued: “There were flames. First, there wasn’t a crowd but then people started coming and crowding up to see it.

“Then the fire brigade came and blocked the road. It was horrible.”
