Victims included residents who had been in church to celebrate an Orthodox Christian holiday.

“It is heinous to attack the main square of a large city, in the morning, while people are out walking, some going to church to celebrate a religious day for many Ukrainians,” Denise Brown, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine, said in a statement.

Chernihiv – which had a pre-war population of around 285,000 – is located roughly 30 miles from the border with Belarus.
