Huge 100ft fire breaks out at industrial estate as 'explosions' heard by neighbours

A huge fire has broken out at an industrial estate as neighbours reportedly heard “explosions”.

Smoke was seen billowing into the skyline in Bridgend, South Wales, on Friday evening (January 19). Fire crews sent 10 appliances to the Bridgend Industrial Estate just before 8.30pm.

People living near to the site have been urged to keep their doors and windows closed. Smoke coming from the industrial unit can be seen for miles.

A South Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Crews are in attendance at a building fire on Bridgend Industrial Estate, Bridgend. We are advising persons living in the area to keep doors & windows closed. We are advising people to stay away from the area at this time.”

Neighbour Mike Jordan said flames from the fire must have been around “100ft high”. Speaking to WalesOnline, he said: “I just saw an incredible glow on the horizon and billowing smoke…I’ve never seen an inferno like it. It just lit up the whole skyline.

“The flames must have been about 100ft high – it was ludicrous…all the traffic was slowing down, you could feel the heat from the actual flames on the main road. At that point the police started closing the roads off to try and control the traffic a little bit.”

While Courtney Lamont-Hughes, 18, told BBC Wales: “It looks like a massive building, lots of offices, it’s taken out the whole building. The police and fire service told us to stay back.”

Abby Bolter, who lives in Bridgend, said she heard a “large bang”. She added: “I heard people shouting and assumed it was fireworks, then I saw the fire. Smoke must be 200ft in the air.”

The Welsh Ambulance Service said it had attended the scene but no injuries have been reported. The service told the BBC: “We sent one operations manager and one hazardous area response team to the scene.”

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
