Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and PGA Tour golfer Rory McIlroy are the highest earners among the seven new investors in Formula 1 team Alpine. Heavyweight boxer Anthony Josua, football players Juan Mata and Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce are the other five sports stars joining the investor group.
Alpine Racing previously attracted the investment of Wrexham’s Hollywood owners, Rob McElhenny and Ryan Reynolds, along with the actor Michael B. Jordan. The new seven are the first additions from the playing side of sports to become involved.
The move follows several basketball players and golfers becoming minority owners in the English football club Leeds United earlier this summer. But this group comes from a more diverse cross-section of sports.
Otro Capital, who the seven are joining as strategic partners, announced the £174 million investment Tuesday. The specific stake of each investor has yet to be made public, but Daily Express Sports has broken down every individual and how much they earn annually below.
Anthony Joshua
The British boxer is one of only two fighters featured on the 2023 Forbes list of highest-paid athletes; undisputed super middleweight title holder Canelo Alvarez is the other.
Joshua is tied for 28th out of 50 alongside Aaron Rodgers, golfer Jon Rahm and football star Mohamed Salah. The quartet all have total earnings of £43.6 million each.
Juan Mata
After a single season playing for Galatasaray in Turkey, Mata now plays for Japanese club Vissel Kobe. During his year in Istanbul, he reportedly earned £1.65 million.
Before that, the attacking midfielder spent almost a decade playing for Premier League team Manchester United. While in England, he was estimated to be making more than £8.2 million per season.
Patrick Mahomes
The Chiefs quarterback is the third highest-earning quarterback in the NFL behind Kyler Murray and Russell Wilson. Mahomes’ £16.45 million off-the-field earnings offset the relatively paltry £32.3 million he gets from playing under one of the most team-friendly contracts in the league for someone of his stature.
Over his lengthy contract, the play-caller averages £37 million, seventh in the NFL. Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, Murray and Wilson all earn more.
Rory McIlroy
The British golfer is another name in the Forbes top 50. McIlroy earned £60.4 million last year, the most for a non-LIV Golf player.
Only Tiger Woods, at almost £50 million, tops his £32.9 million off-the-course earnings. The Northern Irishman earns fractionally more, £33.5 million, golfing.
