Houthis make humiliating blunder and attack tanker carrying Russian oil in Red Sea chaos

Houthi fighters in Yemen accidentally targeted a tanker transporting Russian oil according to a British maritime security company.

The missile attack is reported to have occurred about 90 nautical miles southeast of the Yemeni port city of Aden, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO)

The UKMTO report concluded: “The master reported a missile landing in the water 400-500 metres away, and being followed by three small craft.”

No injuries or damage has been reported, they added.

British maritime security firm Ambrey noted this is not the first time a ship carrying Russian oil has been targeted.

Ambrey said: “This was the second tanker mistakenly targeted by the Houthis whilst carrying Russian oil.”

Meanwhile, US Central Command said the “follow-on action” early Saturday local time against a Houthi radar site was conducted by the Navy destroyer USS Carney using Tomahawk land attack missiles.

The first day of strikes Friday hit 28 locations and struck more than 60 targets. President Joe Biden had warned Friday that the Houthis could face further strikes.

The latest strike came after the US Navy on Friday warned American-flagged vessels to steer clear of areas around Yemen in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden for the next 72 hours after the initial airstrikes.

The warning came as Yemen’s Houthis vowed fierce retaliation, further raising the prospect of a wider conflict in a region already beset by Israel’s war in Gaza.

US military and White House officials said they expected the Houthis to try to strike back.
