Horror as young men's bodies burned in Haiti streets with nation facing 'hunger emergency'

Gruesome footage has been taken in Haiti reporting to show showing the burning bodies of several young men who were apparently stopped while carrying weapons. The video has been circulating online amid widespread reports of intense gunfire in various areas of Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince.

According to the WFP’s Haiti director, Jean-Martin Bauer, the current situation represents the worst on record, with the country sliding into a hunger emergency.

The UN organisation has estimated that acute hunger has affected 4.9 million Haitians, who have been finding it increasingly challenging to purchase sufficient food since the assassination of the country’s president, Jovenel Moïse, in July 2021.

As a result of the ensuing violence and lawlessness, much of the country has fallen under the control of rival armed groups, leading to a collapse of the economy, soaring inflation rates of up to 49.3 per cent, and limited access to food and water.
