Horror as toddler dies at popular holiday lake spot after frantic incident

Tragedy struck in Australia on January 6 when a young child lost their life in an incident being investigated by police officers.

A toddler has died after being hit by a ute – a two-door vehicle popular Down Under. The incident happened at a busy lakeside holiday park in the central area of the New South Wales region.

Emergency services rushed to Fashions Mount Rd at Lake Burrendong, southeast of the city of Dubbo on Saturday, at approximately 11am local time (12am GMT).

NSW Ambulance paramedics initially provided emergency care to the child directly at the scene.

The toddler, understood to have been one year old, was then airlifted in critical condition to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead – a suburb in Sydney.

Despite the best efforts made by medical experts, the baby could not be saved.

The death of the child in hospital was announced at about 5pm local time (6am GMT).

A crime scene has since been established with police investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Lake Burrendong is a man-made reservoir and a popular holiday spot. Many also head there to spend the day boating, fishing and kayaking.

The waters of the Macquarie and Cudgegong rivers and Meroo Creek feed the lake. When full, it has a capacity of some 1,189,000 megalitres – three times larger than Sydney Harbour.
