Horrifying moment tourists sprint from cliff collapse at one of UK's most popular beach

This is the dramatic moment beachgoers fled for their lives as a cliff at West Bay in Dorset comes toppling down and lands just inches from where they stand.

Footage from a popular beach in Britain shows a huge section of 150ft cliff dropping towards people.

At first, a man in an orange top is seen taking a photo of the World Heritage Site as a section of the cliff starts to move slightly.

A bit of dust and mud falls before a big chunk of the stone detaches from the cliff.

Three beachgoers are seen running as the chunk of cliff falls towards them and into the sea.

Dorset Council shared the clip on their Facebook page after the collapse on Tuesday., warning that “Rockfalls and landslips can happen anytime”.

One person wrote: “I cannot believe people stood watching. Breaks my heart to see this, my favourite happy place.”

Another added: “Warning signs everywhere but they still take no notice. Great footage of our falling cliffs.”

The dangerous cliffs are known as the Jurassic Coast’s Golden Gateway and stretch for dozens of miles.

Following the collapse, a part of East Beach in West Bay, near Bridport was cordoned off.

A spokesman for Dorset Council said: “The Jurassic Coast is a wonderful place to visit but it’s important to use common sense and caution – stay away from the edge and base of cliffs and always pay attention to warning signs, safety messages and the tides.”

The council has also shared “golden rules” beachgoers should follow to stay safe.

  1. Stay away from the edge of the cliff top – admire the view from a safe distance
  2. Stay away from the base of cliffs: rock falls and landslides can happen at any time. If you are under a rock fall, the likelihood is you will die
  3. Pay attention to warning signs – they are there for your safety
  4. Check tide times before you set off to avoid being cut off by incoming tides
  5. Keep dogs on leads near the cliff edge
