Dramatic body camera footage shows the moment a Seattle police officer fatally plowed into a student while responding to an urgent call.
In January this year Jaahnavi Kandula, a Northeast University student, was crossing the road in Seattle.
Officer Kevin Dave was responding to a Priority One call when he crashed into the 23-year-old student.
He was driving at 74mph hour in a 25 miles per hour zone when he smashed into Kandula at the intersection of Dexter Avenue North and Thomas Street.
Mr Dave, after hitting Kandula, called for help and began performing CPR on her until several other first responders arrived at the scene.
Officials said the cop was originally rushing to the scene of an overdose, with a Priority One call being the highest priority.
Dave was heard on the video telling a responding officer, “Lights were on. I was chirping the sirens…she was in the crosswalk.
“She saw me, she started running through the crosswalk. Slammed on my breaks. Started staying back where she should before crossing”.
Kandula died at the hospital just a day after the incident, on January 24.
Publicola, which published the footage, reported that the King County Prosecutor’s Office is still deciding whether to charge Mr Dave with a crime.
A Seattle police spokesperson previously said: “At this point in the investigation, we have no reason to believe the officer intended to hit that woman.”
According to the department, Mr Dave has worked as an officer since November 2019.
Police said the cop was not suspended but was merely told to take off their shift following the crash as a “release day” to deal with a “traumatic or upsetting” experience.
