Holidaymakers left scrambling as wildfires tear through gorgeous Greek island

Holidaymakers in the Greek Island of Rhodes were forced to leave their hotels after out-of-control wildfires ravaged the island.

A number of disturbing videos on social media show the skies above the island full of smoke with the orange hue of the flames clearly visible.

According to the reports, four locations have been evacuated, including two seaside resorts.

Greece’s deputy fire chief said the fires on Rhodes are the most difficult his service is currently facing.

Five helicopters and 173 firefighters are operating in the area, with two hotels in the Kiotari area reported to have been damaged by fire.

A social media user tweeted: “My nephew is in Rhodes and this is their hotel near the fires, they’ve been evacuated…scared as hell. The locals are being really supportive and helpful. They’ve not seen this for years.”

Another user tweeted: “I think everyone got out safe but we’re all in random hotels/shops seeking refuge for now.

“Unfortunately no way of knowing what’s happening.

“Greek people have been so kind and have welcomed us in and given us water and ice lollies for the kids.”
