Hijack horror as Israeli cargo ship stormed by 'Iran-backed militia' in Red Sea

Armed hijackers have reportedly stormed an Israeli-flagged cargo vessel in the Red Sea and taken the crew hostage.

Members of the Yemeni-based Houthi rebel group are understood to have taken control of the Galaxy Leader ship with 22 sailors on board.

Israeli authorities confirmed the Galaxy Leader had been seized but it is thought that there are no nationals from the country on board.

The Houthis have been waging a bloody civil war in Yemen for almost a decade fighting government forces, they are understood to be supported by Iran.

In recent weeks the Israeli navy moved ships into the Red Sea capable of intercepting missiles which had been fired from Houthi territory in Yemen since the Israel-Hamas war broke out on October 7.
