Hidden gem 1981 DeLorean with just 977 miles on the clock discovered in barn

A 1981 DeLorean was discovered after being forgotten in an old Wisconsin barn.

The car had been forgotten for so long it had begun to sink into the earth it was parked on.

A group of classic car restorers discovered it after Michael McElhattan of DeLorean Midwest had heard rumors of its existence from the original owner’s nephew.

The famous car was made popular in the 1985 Michael J Fox movie, Back to the Future. Only 9,000 of these classic cars were ever produced, and they can be worth up to $170,000.

The car was discovered in pristine – albeit very dirty – condition with just 977 miles on it.

And better yet, the 90-year-old was prepared to sell it.

“It happened pretty quick, because once I found out the car was close, and it was a low mileage car, I was excited to go take a look,” McElhattan said to WDJT.

The owner told McElhattan he had not moved the car in about five years. The car had very little sun damage.

“He said he would go out in the barn and just look at it, because he thought it was a really cool car,” McElhattan said. “The condition of the leather, the condition of the instruments cluster in the dash, and a lot of places where you see sun damage, that’s one of the big killers on this.”

However, McElhattan had to evict some residents who had decided to call the old car their home.

Quite a few rodents were living in the classic car at the time of its discovery.

“We open it up, and the first thing I saw was a mouse go running across the center console,” McElhattan said.

Despite that, it’s one of the lowest-mileage examples of a DeLorean discovered in recent years.
