A hero doctor rushed away from a party to remove an open safety pin from a baby’s throat.
Dr Yéssica Vargas, the hospital’s only paediatric surgeon, was attending a social event when she got the call.
She immediately left the bash and rushed to the hospital to save the eight-month-old baby’s life.
The unnamed infant’s mother realised she was suffering from serious breathing problems at around 8pm on October 28.
The mum took her daughter to the Coronel Oviedo Regional Hospital in the Paraguayan city of Coronel Oviedo.

Attending medics carried out an X-ray and realised the baby had an open safety pin lodged in her throat.
Given the seriousness of the situation, they called the hospital’s only paediatric surgeon, Dr Vargas, who was off duty at the time.
As the pin was open, the doctor felt that the girl was at risk and immediately left her party to attend to the little patient.
She later explained that the foreign object could cause serious internal injuries if it passed into the girl’s digestive tract.
In such a case, internal bleeding could have endangered the baby’s life.
She said they would typically use an endoscope for such a procedure, but as the hospital did not have one, Dr Vargas had to think on her feet.
In the end, she used a laryngoscope and surgical instruments to remove the pin.
They managed to safely remove the object and Dr Vargas thanked her supporting medical team for their part in the successful operation. She added that the baby’s mother gave everyone a huge hug of gratitude.
A hospital spokesperson later announced that they are currently in the process of acquiring endoscopic equipment as well as hiring more paediatric medical professionals to help with such cases in the future.
