'Have you lost your mind?' Dave Ramsey warns couple in £800k debt 'don't spend anything'

A video clip of a young woman calling Dave Ramsey for help due to being almost $1million (£803,990) in debt has gone viral.

The exchange from 2018 was posted on Mr Ramsey’s TikTok page and has since been liked over 2 million times.

In the call, the 29-year-old woman revealed that she and her 32-year-old partner were nearly $1million (£803,990) and wanted to ask the financial expert how to get rid of it.

During the conversation, the caller cited that the majority of the debt came from personal credit card bills and student loans.

She explained: “We have probably just under $1million in debt and we wanna know how to get debt free without filing bankruptcy.”

In response to her query, Dave Ramsey asked how much of the total debt comes from the mortgage on their home.

The caller highlighted that the mortgage only makes up around $210,000 (£168,850.50) from the overall amount.

Mr Ramsey appeared confused by the rest of the debt total and asked: “So you have $600,000 (£482,430) in what?”

To this question, the caller admitted that $335,000 (£269,356.75) of the debt amount comes from the pair’s student loans, with both having advanced degrees.

Don’t miss…

Shocked at the amount the caller owes, Mr Ramsey asked how old she was, to which she responded 29.

The personal finance expert replied: “What in the world?” He proceeded to ask if the couple were equally in debt or had “only of you completely lost your mind”.

In her response to this question, the caller explained that she has the majority of student loan debt while her husband has most of the credit card debt.

As well as this, she shared that the pair of them are currently working and have jobs in Government.

When asked how much their income is, the caller revealed that the pair bring in $230,000 (£184,931.50) a year.

With all this information, the investing and savings expert was able to provide much-needed advice to the couple.

Mr Ramsey said: “Well, you’re scared, and you should be. You’re disgusted and you should be.

“You’re in the early stages of being sick and tired of being sick and tired and you should be.”

“So I’m getting ready to destroy your life as you know it because your lifestyle is considerably above your extremely good income and has been for a period of time, and so you’ve gotten used to spending like you’re in Congress.”

“You’re gonna have to not care what anyone thinks, including each other, because you’re not gonna spend any money on anything ever for the next three years.”
