Hated ULEZ extension begins as Sadiq Khan rival calls for him to be booted out

Sadiq Khan’s rival has urged voters to boot him out as London Mayor following backlash over the expansion of the city’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ).

Susan Hall, a Conservative Member of the London Assembly, warned it is a “dark day” for drivers as some car owners now face £12.50 a day fees if they own a non-compliant vehicle.

The scheme has been met with resistance across London in recent months, with many cameras being vandalised and protests forming on the streets.

Ms Hall said: “This is a dark day for drivers. This is going to be a disaster for families, small businesses and charities.

“It is nothing but a tax grab which will have only a negligible effect on air quality.”

Mr Khan defended his move last night saying: “I am not prepared to stand idly by when we have the ability to save lives and tackle the climate crisis.”

But Transport Secretary Mark Harper called it “the latest salvo in Labour’s war on motorists”.

FairFuel UK accused Mr Khan of punishing drivers to pursue his “misinformed green pipedream”.

The Taxpayers’ Alliance added: “Motorists elsewhere fear similar schemes in their areas.”
