“I’d never met him before,” Meghan recalled in her and Harry’s Netflix series, which aired in December 2022, explaining her friendship with Mr Perry began when he sent her a letter ahead of her wedding to Harry, expressing his sympathy regarding her public estrangement from her father, Thomas Markle.
“He said he was praying for me, and if I ever need anything, he would be there,” she said.
By her own account, the Duchess was then “a wreck” after her experiences with the media and in the monarchy. as she explained: “I was just crying and crying. Sometimes it’s easier to open up to someone who knows nothing at all, and that was that moment with me and Tyler.”
Mr Perry also gave his version of that phone call.: “I could hear the fear, it was palpable.”
Later, when Harry and Meghan departed the Royal Family, Mr Perry offered them his Beverly Hills mansion to stay in for as long as they needed, promising that they would have security there.
