Harry escorted by armed bodyguards as he enters The Late Show studio

Prince Harry was surrounded by security guards as he made his way into The Late Show studio in New York City on Monday as part of his memoir promotion tour. The Duke of Sussex was spotted swiftly stepping out of a black Cadillac worth $82,000 and rushing to the building, escorted by three bodyguards, to pre-record an interview with Late Show host Stephen Colbert. The interview, set to hit airwaves on Tuesday night, follows Harry’s interview with Anderson Cooper for 60 Minutes and Tom Bradby for ITV News.

The 38-year-old and his wife, Meghan Markle, have stepped up security since they moved to North America. So much so that the estimated annual security bill could reach an eye-watering $3million, according to Forbes.

Their $40.9million Montecito mansion is reportedly protected by a combination of guards and electronics to secure the 7.4-acre estate. Part of the money goes to security guards who escort them safely in vehicles for any planned visit.

Security and safety are some of the reasons the couple left the Royal Family in 2020. In an episode of their Netflix documentary, Meghan said she received death threats and upsetting comments during her time in the Firm.

Growing emotional, Meghan said: “I was going through the manual for our security team at home, and one of the pages I happened to flip to it was about online monitoring and it said, ‘If you see a tweet like this, please report it to the head of security immediately'”.

She continued: “It just said: ‘Meghan just needs to die. Someone needs to kill her. Maybe it should be me.’

“And it’s just like, okay. That’s like what’s actually out in the world because of people creating hate.”

Getting visibly upset, she said: “And I’m a mum. That’s my real life. And that’s the piece when you see it and go, ‘You are making people want to kill me.’

“It’s not just a tabloid. It’s not just some story. You are making me scared,” she said, accusing newspapers of sowing anger among their readers directed at her.
