The authorities in Spain have launched an investigation after a British tourist had to be rescued twice in less than a day while hiking in the country’s autonomous Cantabria region.
The hapless hiker was rescued for the first time on Monday (June 26) in Camaleño after she became disorientated walking a route between the villages of Pembes and Mogrovejo.
The 64-year-old then got lost a second time while walking a circular route in Riofrio in the Vega de Liébana region of Cantabria.
Cantabria’s 112 emergency centre received notice of the second incident at about 10.50pm.
Rescue teams were mobilised and an Advanced Command Post was set up for a second time.
It was coordinated by technicians from the Directorate General of the Interior. When they finally located her, the woman was found having suffered injuries.
Firefighters and staff from the country’s Natural Environment Service then had to stretcher her to a spot which was accessible to all-terrain vehicles.
Spains’ Guardia Civil is reportedly investigating what happened with two incidents affecting the same person within 24 hours.
It has already taken statements from the woman, a man who was with her and witnesses, according to news website ABC Spain.
