Grandmother-of-12 pleads 'help me' to daughter during 'sickening' attack at funeral wake

A grandmother was heard pleading “help me” as she suffered “sickening” injuries from an alleged vicious assault at a funeral wake. Belinda Strickland, 62, is receiving treatment for broken ribs, a punctured lung and facial injuries after the horrific ordeal at the Splott Conservative Club in Cardiff on June 9.

The grandmother-of-12 had only been at the wake for 20 minutes and was standing by the bar speaking to a man when the savage assault took place, alleged her daughter Jinaise Joseph.

She said: “I wasn’t there but I got a phone call and I could hear my mum saying ‘help me, help me’. There was going to be a long wait for the ambulance so some of the staff at the club helped us get her to hospital.

“When we got to the hospital I couldn’t go into the room. It was just horrendous.

“She is such a well-loved and well-liked person and the attack happened so quickly. I don’t know how anyone could do this to her. Someone who has seen the CCTV footage of what happened said it was sickening and shocking.

Belinda is still in hospital five days later and police have spoken to her. The authorities are reviewing CCTV footage of the wake, which was for Belinda’s best friend’s partner, and carrying out forensic investigations, according to WalesOnline.

South Wales Police say they are investigating an assault reported just before 8pm on Friday, June 9 at the Splott Conservative Club.

A spokeswoman said: “A 62-year-old woman from Rumney is being treated in hospital for her injuries and enquiries are ongoing.”

Police are appealing for any witnesses and are asking anyone with information to contact them quoting occurrence *189387.
