Golden Globes host Jo Koy ‘hung out to dry’ after ‘distasteful’ Royal Family dig

Golden Globes host Jo Koy was hung out to dry after he made a “distasteful” dig at the Royal Family in the opening few minutes of his awards ceremony opening monologue.

The comedian, who has been criticised following his debut at the awards, has been slammed by fans of the Royal Family for his comments.

During his opening monologue, he quipped: “Succession is a great series about a rich, white, dysfunctional family, all scheming…Oh, wait, that’s The Crown. I’m sorry!”

Speaking about his comments on GB News showbiz reporter Stephanie Takyi said his joke had been “distasteful”.

On Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Mr Koy said: “Harry and Meghan Markle got paid millions for doing absolutely nothing – and that’s just by Netflix.”

Ms Tayki added that after his disastrous debut, which she said “pushed controversial too far”, she believed Mr Koy wouldn’t be invited back.

Ms Takyi explained: “He made fun of the royals, he made fun of Taylor Swift, and he’s been really hung out to dry.

“I don’t think he will be ever presenting the Golden Globes again. Usually, most people say he’s quite funny and that’s the whole reason why he was picked in the first place.

“[L]ast night, I don’t know if it was the pressure, I don’t know if it was the nervousness, but this is the first Golden Globes that they’ve had on TV in the first two years.”

She added that Mr Koy had “taken all the headlines for the wrong reasons”.

It wasn’t just Ms Takyi who was upset by Mr Koy’s performance, during the ceremony he also appeared to recognise not all his material was working. He exclaimed: “I got the gig 10 days ago, you want a perfect monologue?!”

Speaking to Variety, Mr Koy admitted: “I couldn’t believe this was happening – and then I woke up and went, ‘Wait a minute, I have two weeks to write jokes!’ Actually, I think I had less than two weeks because I didn’t get my writers until five days later.”

During his opening monologue, Mr Koy also took aim at Taylor Swift with a joke that also received a cold reception.

Mr Koy quipped: “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift… there’s just more to go to here.”

When the camera switched to Ms Swift, the musician could be seen pursing her lips before taking a sip of her drink.

Her reaction was echoed by famous faces on social media. TV host Piers Morgan wrote: “If Taylor Swift death stares could actually kill, Joy Koy would now be deceased.”
