A two-year-old girl who ran away from her home in Michigan’s upper Peniusla was found in the woods hours later sleeping on her family dogs, state police said.
Michigan police Lt. Mark Giannunzio said Thursday they found the girl, who was identified as Thea Chase, in the woods sleeping on top of the dogs.
He said, “It’s a remarkable story.”
“She laid down and sed one of the dogs as pillows, and the other laid right next to her and kept her safe.”
The little girl was reported to have gone missing on Wednesday, Giannunzio said.
Troopers said they used drones and police dogs to aid in their search while local police and citizens from both Michigan and Wisconsin helped look for the little girl.
Troopers from the Michigan State Police Iron Moutain post had been called to a home in the Faithorn area of Menominee County Wednesday when the girl vanished.
Around midnight, a citizen on an ATV spotted the girl about three miles from her home state.
GIannuzio said a local medical facility checked the girl and showed no signs of injury.
Thea’s mom, Brooke Chase, told WJMN-TV that the family frantically searched for the missing girl before contacting authorities.
“I realized she was missing and I’m telling her uncle, and I said, ‘Where is she?’” Chase told the outlet. “We’re searching all around the yard, up and down the roads, screaming at the top of our lungs her name, calling for the dogs because the dogs were missing, too.
