Girl, 12, charged after acid attack on 11-year-old in school playground

A 12-year-old girl has been charged after an acid attack on an 11-year-old in a playground in Detroit.

Deaira Summers was at the Vernor Elementary School playground when an argument broke out between the 12-year-old, who has not been named, and her cousin. The 12-year-old girl’s mother allegedly handed her daughter a bottle of acid, that she threw over the girls.

Deaira – who was not even involved in the fight – suffered severe burns to her back, legs, and arms.  Vernor Elementary School has said that neither of the families involved in the incident attend the school and described it as a “community matter”.

Recalling her ordeal, Deaira told WSAZ: “Two seconds later, it started like burning and went through my shirt, my shorts.  I was screaming and I was crying.”

She was taken to hospital, where she spent three days receiving treatment for her horrific injuries. Deaira’s grandmother, Debra Golston, said her granddaughter – who suffered third-degree burns -was “lucky to be alive”.

The 12-year-old has been charged with assault and intent to do bodily harm. She appeared in court for a preliminary hearing on Saturday and was given a $10,000 bond.

The suspect, who was ordered to have no contact with Deaira or any of the other witnesses, is due back in court on July 18.
