Giraffe falls and smashes through family's car windshield at wildlife centre

A family was left shocked after a giraffe fell and smashed into their car at a Texas wildlife center on Thursday.

Kari Hill had been driving through Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose, Texas, with her two teenage sons and 1-year-old granddaughter when a giraffe stopped by her car, she told WFAA.

The giraffe poked his head through the sunroof of her car, looking for a snack.

Hill took a quick selfie with the giraffe before the animal suddenly tripped and fell onto the car.

Hill said to WFAA: “All was great until he lost his balance and fell onto my windshield.”

She continued: “[The windshield] started caving in while he was flailing, trying to get his footing back.

“We were covered in glass, and I thought it was about to turn very bad, but then the giraffe regained his footing and took off.”

Hill sped off in her car before she pulled over to make sure “the kids got all the glass off of them.”

Hill immediately called the park’s emergency hotline, who escorted them out of the park.

Her car was towed and she had to file an insurance claim.

Hill added: “[It was] such a quick, freak accident. [I’m] glad it wasn’t worse. Cars can be replaced. People can’t.”

Rim Wildlife said the giraffe is doing fine after the incident.

The park said the “unfortunate” incident was unlike anything they’d seen in the giraffe’s 11-year-stay at the park.

They reportedly told Hill they are not responsible for paying for the damages due to a waiver she signed before she entered the facility.

The incident occurred just a quarter of the way through the $89 drive.
