Germany will wear a pink away shirt at Euro 2024 in a move that claims to represent the diversity of the country’s population and football fanbase. In a clever video revealing the kit, Die Mannschaft’s players hit back at criticisms of the colour of the shirt.
Julian Nagelsmann’s side will hope to go far at the tournament, especially with it being played on home soil. Last week, they announced the home and away strips that they will wear this summer.
Germany’s home kit features the traditional white and black trim colour scheme. However, the DFB raised eyebrows when they unveiled a bright pink away shirt.
Manufacturer Adidas and the German football governing body insist that the colour represents the diversity within the population and the fanbase of their national team.
A person speaking over the announcement video says: “That is not a shirt for legends.”
Germany forward Thomas Muller interjects and says: “Well, let me ask one…”
The shot then cuts to German football icon Rudi Voller, a 1990 World Cup winner, who insists: “Well I think it is.”
A second voice then says: “That’s not a Germany shirt.”
The camera then pans to attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz who insists: “It is!”
Bayern Munich and German football legend Uli Hoeness said last week that criticisms of the shirt were “nonsense”. The former Bayern director said that the most important thing is that the players earn success while wearing the kit.
“All these things are nonsense,” Hoeness said. “They can even play with a naked torso and something painted on. The most important thing is what happens on the pitch. I couldn’t care less about what they’re wearing.”
