German police in balaclavas spotted at remote reservoir as Madeleine McCann search starts

Balaclava-wearing German police have been seen at a dam in the Algarve where the biggest search for Madeleine McCann in nine years is taking place. The search for the missing girl started at 9.00 am today and is being led by German officers who requested the search. British authorities are expected to be present although they are understood to be taking a more passive role.

The Arade Dam is approximately 31 miles and a 45-minute drive away from where Madeleine went missing in Praia da Luz, 16 years ago.

The reservoir is understood to have a surface area of five miles squared, according to alltrails. It was also previously described by Christian Brueckner, a sole suspect in the case, as his “little paradise”.

German authorities believe Brueckner, 45, murdered Madeleine after kidnapping her from the holiday home where the McCanns were staying.
