Gen Z and millennials quitting UK life for work from home jobs in Spain

Gen Z and millennial workers would quit Britain to work overseas, a poll shows. Of 2,000 adults in employment, 36 percent of younger workers said they would consider working a fully remote job so they can live anywhere in the world.

Another 35 percent said they thought there are more opportunities for career progress outside Britain, the poll commissioned by new payments app, Zing, shows.

James Allan, founder and CEO of Zing said: “Many people are increasingly living an international lifestyle. More than half have either spent time living abroad or have aspirations to do so.”

The most popular countries Gen Z and millennial workers would consider emigrating to are Canada, Spain, the US and Austalia.

The sectors identified by the research as those most likely to be sought after abroad are tech, tourism and education.

Fifty nine percent of the younger workforce agreed the ability to work remotely is an important factor for them when choosing their next job.

Moreover, 54 percent of young respondents to the poll, agreed they would be more inclined to apply to a company which allows employees to work anywhere in the world.

But only nine percent said their current employer allows them to do that.

Almost half of those polled said they would welcome their employer introducing a “work from anywhere” policy, with 66 percent saying it would improve work/life balance. Fifty percent said such an approach might even lead to an increase in productivity.

Despite the appeal of working overseas, 44 percent identified language barriers as potential problems. Nine percent said managing their money in other currencies might also prove to be a challenge.

Mr Allan said the research found those polled often have frustrations when sending, spending and converting money, adding: “That’s why now is the time for a new kind of international payments solution.”

The Zing app, which launched on Wednesday (January 3), allows users to hold up to 10 different currencies and lock conversion rates without fees. Money can also be sent internationally using the app, which is backed by HSBC.
