Fuming British boxer pushes ref away on undercard of Tyson Fury vs Francis Ngannou

David Adeleye was left fuming by the referee stopping his British title fight with Fabio Wardley in the seventh round. So much so, that he shoved John Latham halfway across the ring as the experienced official stepped in and waved off the contest.

Fight report

Adeleye and Wardley took to the centre of the ring from the off as they let hard thudding shots fly. A solid left hook caught Wardley’s attention in the last few seconds of the opener but the champion came back firing. A powerful flurry backed Adeleye up into the corner before the bell rang to end the first round.

In the second and third, it was more of the same, Wardley stalking and looking to land his trademark overhand right, while Adeleye circled and tried to catch his man coming in. Adeleye’s best shot was his heavy jab but a lack of variety with the lead hand became predictable.

Wardley’s fast footwork left Adeleye lunging over his front foot as he picked his man off from range. For a moment, it looked as though Wardley had Adeleye in real trouble at the quarter-way mark but the challenger unleashed a massive left hook that narrowly missed the target to remind his rival that he was still in the fight.

In round six, Adeleye came flying out the blocks and buzzed Wardley with a stinging left hook on the break after the pair tangled up on the inside. Wardley returned the favour with a big right hand that buckled Adeleye’s knees.

He followed up with a few more thudding shots to his opponent’s body and head in what was his strongest round to that point. Remarkably both men stayed on their feet through the halfway point despite eating their fair share of concusive shots.
