Former middle school teacher accused of 2-month 'sexual relationship' with student


A former middle school teacher has been arrested over allegations she previously had a two-month sexual relationship with one of her pupils. 

Delaware State Police arrested 42-year old Reed Messer of Greenville, South Carolina on Monday, who is accused of multiple counts of rape and sexual abuse of a child by a person of trust.

The State Police’s Criminal Investigations Unit receieved a report from the Delaware Division of Family Services on December 23 last year alleging Messer had a sexual relationship with a student at Stanton Middle School in Wilmington in 2014. 

Investigators believe the relationship began in October that year and lasted for about two months, according to police. 

Law enforcement in South Carolina subsequently secured a warrant for Messer’s arrest on April 26, which resulted in her being led from her Greenville home into custody.

Messer was held in the Department of Corrections in South Carolina until Monday, before being extradited back to Delaware.

She is charged with two counts of first-degree sexual abuse of a child by a person of trust, and 10 counts of third-degree rape and 10 counts fourth-degree rape. All charges are felonies. 

Messer was arraigned by the Justice of the Peace Court and held in the Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution with bond set at $310,000 cash. 

Police added that Messer has not been emloyed by the school since November 2014. 

On leaving Delaware, it is believed she took up a role at Legacy Early College, Greenville. 

South Carolina’s State Board of Education ruled on May 5 that Messer’s teaching certificate should be suspended ‘as a result of her arrest for 22 counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor.

Meanwhile, a brief statement from police read: “Due to the sensitivity of this case, and in consideration of the victim, only limited information will be released.”
