Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron urges "close friend" Israel to let aid into Gaza

The Foreign Secretary has said he does not want to see Israel prosecuted for failing to allow aid into Gaza, Tory MPs have said.

Lord Cameron addressed the 1922 Committee of backbench MPs where he told how he is working with Israel “as a close friend” when it comes to humanitarian support.

One MP present said Lord Cameron dismissed claims over the weekend that he was considering imposing an arms embargo on Israel if the flow of aid into Gaza did not increase.

But they added that the Foreign Secretary was working as a “close friend” of Israel and, as such, did not want to see the country “in a situation where they are being prosecuted for not letting the aid in”.

One MP said Lord Cameron, who was greeted by the traditional table banging by parliamentarians, received no “hostile pushback” from members after the UK voted for a UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire,

The Tory added: “(Lord Cameron) said that the resolution at the UN, without us drafting it, was our language.”

They added that the Foreign Secretary said he would “stand firm” if Hamas did not abide by any ceasefire, saying: “He wouldn’t be calling for Israel to stop doing their action without there being the other side of the coin.

“He was very balanced in that.”

The UK backed a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) call for a ceasefire in Gaza during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Downing Street said the UNSC resolution sent a clear message that the hostages held by Hamas should be released and aid should be allowed into Gaza.

Tory MPs said China “didn’t really come up” despite Beijing’s attacks on the Electoral Commission and parliamentary communications.

It is understood that Tim Loughton MP “pushed back” on China as he had done in the Commons chamber earlier.

He had said: “The whole of the Chinese communist government in the enhanced tier of the Foreign Influence Registration Scheme”.

A former Cabinet Minister said of Lord Cameron: “A class act, totally on top of his brief as Foreign Secretary.

“Just like the good old days.

“Britain has led the world in securing a ceasefire in Israel/Palestine and that is thanks to him.”
