First ever Tesco pub set to open in time for Coronation – and you won't believe the prices

The first-ever Tesco pub will open its doors in time for King Charles III’s Coronation, offering Britons unrivalled food and drink deals. The King in the Castle, the supermarket chain’s free house debut, opens in London’s Faringdon, but only for two days. During that time, Britons who pop by can enjoy a special Coronation-themed menu with classic British trappings.

Tesco’s newest venture will open from Thursday, May 4, to Friday, May 5, the day before the Coronation.

Staff have decked out the location in wall-to-wall bunting, with floral displays adorning the pub’s exterior.

During its two opening days, the supermarket has teased stacked daytime and evening menus, with prices starting from 50p.

People can enjoy dishes like a classic Royal High Tea in the afternoon for just £10, which they can wash down with a tea-inspired cocktail.

Those more partial to a savoury lunch can take on a Coronation-themed Ploughman’s platter or pick from other snacks and nibbles.

Evening customers at the King in the Castle can order from a gastropub-inspired menu.

Later on, dishes will include Camilla’s King Prawn Curry for £6, which comes with basmati rice.

People can also dine on a Roast ‘SIR’loin Steak for £10, which comes with Balmoral Sauce, Jersey Royals, broccoli and tomatoes.

The offers have proven too good for some to miss, with bookings running out in hours, but walk-ins are still available.

While the food will be enough to entice most, people can enjoy the experience knowing the proceeds will go to a worthy cause.

Tesco will donate the pub’s earnings to The Prince’s Trust, the development and improvement charity founded by King Charles in 1976.

The supermarket is one of the Trust’s longtime partners, with their relationship stretching back five years.

Alessandra Bellini, Tesco Chief Customer Officer, said the supermarket is ready to donate up to a quarter of a million pounds.

She said: “We’ll donate £250,000 from the proceeds of sales of our limited-edition Coronation range in-store, along with all proceeds from the pub to The Prince’s Trust so we can all enjoy food that both tastes good and does good.

“Tesco and The Prince’s Trust have worked together for 5 years, so this is a wonderful way for us to highlight the incredible work that they do and help them to continue to support young people across the UK for many years to come.

“Whether you’re planning to celebrate the Coronation at home with your own party, or are joining us at our pub, we’ve made sure that everyone can enjoy a royally-good weekend.”
