Firefighters battle huge blaze as they desperately try to save trapped crane driver

A huge fire has broken out at a construction site, stranding a worker on a crane and leaving two others missing.

The five-alarm fire broke out at a site in Charlotte, North Carolina, at around 9am on Thursday.

One person was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to WJZY.

But with 15 workers rescued, two others are still unaccounted for, and a crane driver is trapped.

The site is a 15-storey building undergoing construction. The crane driver was dramatically rescued and taken to hospital.

WSOC reporter Joe Bruno tweeted: “Workers tell me two workers were doing windows when the fire broke out. The workers attempted to use a basket to get them out but were unable to due to the smoke.

“They haven’t been able to get in contact with them. They are praying them are okay. Fire Chief Reginald Johnson says two construction workers are unaccounted for.

“15 people rescued. 90 firefighters. Crane operator will survive.”
