Ferry fire leads to mass passenger evacuation in New York Harbor


A fire has broken out in the engine room of a Staten Island leading to hundreds of passengers being evacuated. The blaze caused the boat to stall near the Statue of Liberty while it was crossing from Manhattan to Staten Island.

The incident happened on Thursday at 5pm local time (10pm GMT).

The fire began in the engine room but has since been extinguished by the boat fire suppression team.

The ferry has now been anchored, with those on board removed by other boats and travelling to the St. George Ferry Terminal.

There were approximately 600 passengers onboard at the time. So far, 120 passengers have been evacuated.

There are no reports of injuries so far.
