February 8 – On this day: 50 years since the Beatles made their live debut in America


A reported 73 million people later tuned into watch them perform on The Ed Sullivan Show. The group were joint top of the US hit parade with She Loves You and I Wanna Hold Your Hand.

49 years ago (1974) The three-man crew of the American space station Skylab 4 returned home after a record-breaking 84 days in space.

It was Nasa’s third and final mission to Skylab which was then abandoned.

It crashed back to Earth in 1979 somewhere between Western Australia and the southeastern Indian Ocean.

40 years ago (1983) A massive dust storm hit Australia’s second-largest city Melbourne blocking out the sun.

The red cloud of soil, dust, and sand was swept in by high winds and followed a severe drought which was the worst in the country’s history to date.
