Fears Hamas fighting could spill over as Italy in talks with Middle East leaders over war

Italy is making significant diplomatic strides in the Middle East, striving to prevent the Israel-Palestine conflict from spilling over and destabilising the region further.

Prime Minister Meloni’s administration, led by Foreign Minister Tajani, is actively engaging in dialogue with key Arab nations to mitigate tensions and ensure the safety of its citizens caught in the crossfire.

Speaking to RTL radio, Tajani said: “On the political front, relations are also strong with Egypt and Morocco, but also with Tunisia where there is the migration problem.

“Dialogue must be maintained even with countries with which we do not share policy.”

One of Italy’s primary objectives is to protect its citizens, including Italian Palestinians, residing in Gaza, Tajani added.

The Italian government has initiated dialogues with various Arab countries to exert pressure on Hamas, aiming to secure safe passage for around a dozen individuals through the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt.

Tajani assured that efforts are underway, saying: “We are working intensively with our Consulate in Jerusalem and our Embassy in Cairo to get our compatriots out of Gaza.

“The priority is protecting the security of Italians.”

Prime Minister Meloni further demonstrated Italy’s commitment to regional stability by reaching out to King Abdullah II of Jordan, who visited Rome on Monday.

During a phone call with the Jordan King last week, Meloni reaffirmed Italy’s dedication to enhancing security and stability in the Middle East.

She called for a “rapid de-escalation” of the conflict, which she warned runs a serious risk of spilling over across the region.
