A man was left fighting for his life after falling about 30 feet from a hotel balcony while on holiday in Lanzarote. Father or two Dan Boyle, 31, who was suffering from an undiagnosed chest infection at the time, was resuscitated on the pavement before being taken to hospital.
Mr Boyle was with his partner Ashleigh Lomas along with her sister and partner on the first night of their holiday in the Canary Islands, having landed just six hours before the fall.
Doctors discovered Mr Boyle had pneumonia at the time and they believed it caused his lungs to fill with fluid.
According to a friend of the family, Mr Boyle’s condition, which he was not aware of at the time, caused his heart to stop and led him to fall from the balcony.
Mr Boyle, who lives with Ms Lomas and their two children, aged three and eight, in Hillgate, Stockport, fell from three storeys up, around 25-30ft. He suffered fractures to his skull, breast bone and ribs in the fall.
She added that when Ms Lomas came out to look for her partner she looked over the balcony to see him being resuscitated.
Ms Albiston said: “We have been told a nurse was walking out of the hotel at the time and resuscitated him then called for help.”
She explained that when he arrived at the hospital, Ashleigh was told he had had a chest infection caused by pneumonia and that had caused his lungs to fill with fluid and his heart to stop.
The family friend added: “They have told Ashleigh that it is possible that he is not going to be the same person when he gets better.”
Ms Lomas returned home to Stockport and the children a few days ago with Mr Boyle now stable but unable to talk or communicate.
She added in the GoFundMe blurb: “He was flown over to Gran Canaria and was told he may not make the flight. But he made it there and went straight for brain surgery for a fractured skull and to relieve pressure on his brain.
“Then it was a case of getting the fluid drained from his lungs. He was on oxygen and in an induced coma for the past three weeks.”
“His lungs are now stable and he is off sedation, but is still unresponsive. We don’t know if he’s going to be the same person due to the brain damage.”
Ms Albiston has set up a fundraising page for donations to help bring Mr Boyle back to Britain.
She said: “We need to get Dan home to his partner and his two children. Please help if you can.”
The appeal raised just under £5,000 towards its £35,000 target at the time of writing.
