'Farce!' Nigel Farage erupts at Home Office sacking of border chief inspector

Nigel Farage hit out at James Cleverly after the sacking of the borders and immigration watchdog in a row over border security concerns.

The Home Office said David Neal was fired as the independent chief inspector of borders and immigration after he “breached” the terms of his appointment and “lost the confidence” of the Home Secretary.

It comes after Mr Neal went public with details of two unpublished reports submitted to the Home Office.

Speaking on his GB News show, Mr Farage insisted Mr Cleverly should be “listening” to Mr Neal.

Mr Farage said: “For the second day in a row the chief inspector of borders and immigration David Neal is in the news.

“Yesterday it was the story that one in four of those that come to Britain on visas to work in the care sector are working illegally.

“Today the story he put out saying that under the terms general aviation, which means private jets, a very large number of jets, many hundreds into thousands, come into the country with nobody being checked whatsoever and that this does pose a potential very serious threat.

“Now for his trouble he has been sacked. It’s fair to say he was due to go in a month’s time, he could have reapplied for the job, but James Cleverly has sacked him because he’s broken the normal terms of his contract.

“I have to say Mr Cleverly, rather than sacking Mr Neil, maybe what you should be doing is listening to the fact that the independent chief inspector of our borders has now for two days in a row told us that things are not working, that the whole thing is a farce, bordering on disgrace, and we’re told he’s got many more documents to reveal.”

Mr Neal, whose tenure was due to end on March 21, leaked data to the Daily Mail showing the occupants of hundreds of private jets arriving at London City airport last year did not have their passports physically checked.

Meanwhile, he told The Times that one in four foreign care workers are abusing UK visa rules by working illegally in other industries.

A Home Office spokesman said: “We have terminated the appointment of David Neal, the independent chief inspector of borders and immigration, after he breached the terms of appointment and lost the confidence of the Home Secretary.

“The planned recruitment process for the next independent chief inspector of borders and immigration is in progress.”
