Farage says 'bully' Alastair Campbell should never be on BBC again after Brexit row

Nigel Farage labelled Alastair Campbell a “bully” on Friday (May 12) in the wake of the former Labour spin doctor’s BBC Newsnight rant at host Victoria Derbyshire.

Former UKIP leader turned GB News presenter Mr Farage said Campbell had showed his “true colours” and should never be allowed to return to the Beeb after the tirade.

Appearing on the show on Thursday, Mr Campbell launched into a furious rage, accusing those who “fought so hard for Brexit” to “fess up to their own responsibility and face the fact that what they all promised was a pack of lies”.

And towards the end of the discussion, he turned on the broadcaster as Ms Derbyshire tried to end the debate.

Mr Campbell ranted: “Sorry, you bring these people on, you never challenge them, you let them talk utter rubbish about Brexit and it’s happened on the BBC for year after year after year”.

Ms Derbyshire punched back, responding: “I am not going to take that from you, with respect Mr Campbell.”

The tense exchange prompted Mr Farage to speak out on Twitter, where he wrote: “Alastair Campbell is a thug & a bully who showed his true colours last night.

“He openly lied saying that the UK parliament could stop EU law, which is not true. Newsnight should release footage of his behaviour off air, and he should never be allowed back on the BBC again.”

Mr Campbell also took to Twitter, meanwhile, admitting he had already apologised to Ms Derbyshire.

In the same message, however, he doubled down on his criticism of the BBC adding that it was “infuriating” having to debate with those who “talk absolute rubbish”.

“Agreed re @vicderbyshire – apologised to her afterwards. She is one of the best,” he said.

“But it is infuriating to seek to debate serious issues with people who despite all the damage their beloved Brexit has done continue to talk absolute rubbish eg about how EU law was made or [economic] cost of the Leave campaign lies and false promises.”
