The family of a woman who was hit by a police motorbike which was part of the Duchess of Edinburgh‘s motorcade has said they are “praying for a miracle”. Helen Holland, 81, is fighting for her life after the crash in west London on Wednesday.
The Metropolitan Police said the motorbike collided with Ms Holland at about 3.21pm at the junction of Cromwell Road and Warwick Road in west London, leaving her in a critical condition.
Ms Holland, from Birchanger, Essex, had been in the capital visiting her older sister and her family has said she is in a coma.
In a statement released to Sky News, Ms Holland’s family described her as a “beautiful, loving, kind and caring lady who would always put anyone before herself”.
They said: “The family are deeply saddened and shocked at the news Helen was involved in such a tragic accident.”
The statement added that the outpouring of love and support for the family from those who know Ms Holland is “hugely appreciated”.
They added: “We are all praying for a miracle and ask that you keep her in your thoughts and prayers too.”
The latest statement comes after Ms Holland’s son and daughter-in-law, Martin and Lisa-Marie Holland, told the BBC they were “shocked and sickened” at her “extensive injuries”.
They told the broadcaster: “She is being well cared for by the NHS who we must thank deeply for their help in keeping her alive.”
The BBC has said the family is “calling for a thorough investigation”.
Buckingham Palace said on Thursday that Sophie was “grateful for the swift response by the emergency services”.
The palace said in a statement: “The Duchess’s heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the injured lady and her family.
“She is grateful for the swift response by the emergency services and will keep abreast of developments. Further comment at this time would not be appropriate while the incident is being investigated.”
The Metropolitan Police has said Ms Holland was taken to hospital where she remains in a critical condition.
Police said on Wednesday that no other injuries were reported and inquiries into the crash were ongoing.
The force said the Directorate of Professional Standards, which investigates officers’ conduct, has been informed as per routine.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating what happened.
The IOPC has been approached for comment.
