F1 LIVE: Lewis Hamilton edges closer to FIA penalty as George Russell demands rule changes

Lewis Hamilton will be desperate for Mercedes to be quicker at this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix than they were in Australia last time around. The Silver Arrows were miles adrift of Red Bull and Ferrari in Melbourne and ended up without any points after both of their drivers failed to finish the race.

Hamilton is enduring his worst start to an F1 season and has made no secret of his frustration with Mercedes’ lack of progress from last season. He offered an insight into the team’s problems ahead of practice in Japan, explaining that things have been ‘very complex’ since the start of the current regulation cycle in 2022.

“When we started with this generation of car, we started with five bricks, good weight, we had to knock it down and try again, knock it down, try it again and take off that performance basically,” he said. “And we’ve made all these changes, tried everything, sometimes lost our way, then found it and then lost again. I think it’s just very complex.”
