'F*** the King feed the hungry': Anti-monarchists gather to protest Charles's Coronation

Anti-monarchy group Republic has gathered in Edinburgh to protest the Royal Family as King Charles is presented with the Honours of Scotland.

The King’s ceremony is being held in St Giles’ cathedral, two months after the coronation itself.

Around 300 protesters are expected to attend the passionate protest, with many wielding signs saying: “Not my king”.

However, the area around the ceremony is also lined with fans of the new monarch in a fierce standoff with the yellow-clad activists.

Former First Minister Alex Salmond, now leader of the Alba party, also expressed distaste at the event, saying: “This ceremony is entirely wrong-headed and neither fish nor foul.

“It will end up satisfying no-one and has sketchy historical legitimacy.”

The event, in which the new monarch is presented with what are essentially Scotland’s crown jewels, has been largely scaled-back from previous years, likely to stave off criticism of a lavish event in the middle of a cost of living crisis.

However the strategy has failed to pay off when it comes to Republic protesters, with one placard reading: “F*** the King feed the hungry”.
