Expert pinpoints key sign King Charles will be 'back to work as soon as possible'

King Charles’s recent cancer diagnosis has shocked the nation, but all signs point to hope about the monarch’s condition.

The King has not appointed a counsellor of state. Such a person would be tasked with the duties of the monarch should he be unable to attend to them.

Royal expert and author Pauline MacLaran says this is a vote of confidence on the King’s health so far.

“They can of course be brought in — Princess Anne and Prince Edward would be fully capable of filling in for the King should that need arise,” she tells Daily Express US.

“But at the moment, the Royal Family seem to think Queen Camilla and Prince William will be back to work and can cover to enable the King to dispose of some of his official duties.”

On Monday, Buckingham Palace announced that the King, 75, had been diagnosed with “a form of cancer.”

It is unclear what type of cancer it is, though aides have clarified that it’s not prostate cancer, as the monarch had just been admitted to the hospital for a corrective procedure on a benign enlarged prostate 10 days earlier.

The Palace added that the King remains “wholly positive” as he begins “regular treatments.”

He was spotted smiling and waving at crowds on Tuesday as he departed Clarence House for Buckingham Palace.

“They are obviously hoping he will be back to work as soon as possible,” MacLaran says. “King Charles will miss being out and about on public engagements because it is the part of his role that he has adapted to particularly well.”

Prince Harry is back in the UK to visit his father after the news.

Harry, 39, left Clarence House on Tuesday moments before his father, though sources say he and William are unlikely to meet

A source close to the Duke of Sussex say that he would have been open to meeting with Prince William “if the opportunity were to arise”.

According to the Mirror, a source said: “The Duke’s primary reason to travel to the Uk is to visit his father.

“If the opportunity were to arise to see the Prince of Wales then the Duke would have gladly accepted it.”
