Ex-Arsenal keeper Emiliano Martinez scores bizarre own goal moments after Villa taunts

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was left red-faced after conceding a bizarre own goal during his side’s 3-1 win over Luton on Sunday. At Villa Park, the hosts had been leading 3-0 and their supporters were taunting Rob Edwards’ outfit but had to take a pause at the perplexing goal that they had given up.

As the ball was crossed into the box, Villa centre-back Ezri Konsa attempted to cushion a header back to his goalkeeper but put too much on the backpass and it looped over Martinez, hitting the crossbar before coming back off the Argentinian stopper and into the back of the net.

Villa had moved into a comfortable lead thanks to goals from John McGinn, Moussa Diaby and an own goal from Luton captain Tom Lockyer. The home fans had even resorted to chanting “we want our ball back” when the visitors had a meaningful spell of possession, but shortly after gave Luton hope in the game.

A cross came in from the right and Konsa battled with substitute Elijah Adebayo, the defender came out on top as the ball looped up but having misjudged his header, gave Martinez too much to do and apologised to his goalkeeper after putting his hands on his head in disbelief.

Though the blunder only had a consolation impact on the game, as Konsa and Martinez composed themselves and ensured that Luton could not mount an unlikely comeback.

Konsa will not look back on the moment too fondly, having impressed during the start of the season and even had been tipped for a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad.
