Maupay, who was also involved in an argument with Tottenham’s James Maddison last week, was seen exchanging words with Walker as the right-back went to take a throw-in in front of the dugouts at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Walker was clearly enraged at what had been said. He was seen arguing back with the Brentford striker, who had given his side the lead before a stunning Phil Foden hat-trick completed a comeback for the visitors.
Several players attempted to get involved to simmer tensions between the pair. Fourth official Stuart Attwell initially attempted to intervene and had words with Walker, before Guardiola took matters into his own hands.
The City boss took Walker aside in an attempt to calm him down. Meanwhile, referee Jarred Gillett was seen speaking with Maupay in the middle of the pitch.
Walker, who announced his split from wife Annie Kilner last week, proceeded to take the throw-in but the war of words continued as he emerged back into the pitch. Maupay, known for his enjoyment of winding up the opposition, argued back.
Intriguingly, neither manager wanted to open up on the spat. Guardiola said he would rather not speak about it, while Brentford’s Thomas Frank said he had not spoken with Maupay. The Dane told Sky Sports: “No, I saw they were talking to each other. It’s not my first focus after a game that we lost.”
Maupay wound up Spurs playmaker Maddison by mimicking his dart-throwing celebration. However, the Frenchman was left red-faced when the midfielder and team-mate Brennan Johnson mocked his attempt at miming throwing a dart.
