EU Socialists' plan to woo China exposed in leaked manifesto ahead of elections

A leaked draft of the upcoming European Socialists’ election manifesto revealed the party’s optimistic stance on fostering robust relations with China, despite ongoing concerns about Beijing’s alleged interference in EU democracy.

The draft, obtained by Politico, reads: “We will pursue constructive and robust relations with China.”

Addressing questions about the wording, Giacomo Filibeck, Secretary-General of the Party of European Socialists (PES), stressed that the draft emphasises the need to “rebalance” the EU’s relationship with China by promoting European values and safeguarding its interests.

The draft also takes an ambitious stance on international affairs, advocating for an “international peace conference” on the Middle East.

However, it conspicuously omits any reference to a ceasefire, a decision believed to be influenced by the prominent role of Germany’s SPD within the PES.

In a further blow to Brussels, the manifesto also broaches the topic of a “reform of EU architecture” to facilitate enlargement, breaking a Brussels taboo.

Filibeck argued that such reforms would enhance the EU’s efficiency, democracy, and transparency, asserting that treaty changes have considerable support from several member parties within the socialist family.

A stark contrast emerged between the Socialists and the European People’s Party regarding Josep Borrell, the EU’s top diplomat.

While the EPP’s draft manifesto criticises Socialist-appointed high representatives for their alleged failure to fulfil their roles, Filibeck staunchly defended Borrell.

He described Borrell as “extremely sharp and clear” on the priorities for the stability of the European Union and its positive global role.
