Emergency services rush to Heathrow as 'smoke and fumes' emerge from cockpit of BA flight

Passengers on a British Airways flight at Heathrow Terminal 5 found themselves having to wait for hours on end following what they claim to have initially been told was a “potential contagion”.

Passenger Martin Hill posted online: “Nothing like being locked on a plane with a ‘potential contagion’ for an hour and half with no explanation or information.”

BA have confirmed that a technical fault prompted the plane to land.

Caroline Coram said: “Smoke and fumes in the cockpit of a BA flight arriving at Heathrow today. On landing the crew fell ill. People exposed were asked to remove their clothing.”

The Metropolitan Police and London Fire Brigade both confirmed to Express.co.uk that they attended the scene, although it was largely dealt with by Heathrow’s own emergency services.

A spokesperson for Heathrow Airport told Express.co.uk in a statement: “The safety of our customers and crew is always our top priority. This aircraft landed normally at Heathrow following reports of a technical issue. Customers disembarked the aircraft safely via steps, and we’ve apologised to them for the delay and inconvenience caused to their journey.”

The flight was met by emergency services upon landing.
