Elon Musk hires senior NBCUniversal executive in Twitter shake-up

Twitter has recruited senior NBCUniversal executive Joe Benarroch, as owner Elon Musk continues to make sweeping management changes at the social media giant.

Mr Benarroch is due to commence his role on Monday and will focus on business operations, the BBC reports.

NBCUniversal’s head of advertising Linda Yaccarino was named as Twitter’s new chief executive less than a month ago. She will replace Mr Musk, although the billionaire is still expected to be heavily involved in the business.

Mr Musk vacated the position of chief executive after running a Twitter poll on the matter, asking his 142 million followers:

“Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll.”

More than 17.5 million votes were cast, with 57.5% of respondents affirming that the tycoon should step aside.

Mr Musk followed up on the result with another tweet, writing: “I will resign as CEO as soon as I find someone foolish enough to take the job! After that, I will just run the software & servers teams.”

In a LinkedIn post announcing his new role, Mr Benarroch said: “I am looking forward to bringing my experience to Twitter, and to working with the entire team to build Twitter 2.0 together.”

Ms Yaccarino posted a welcome message her former colleague on Twitter, writing: “Welcome to the flock @benarroch_joe! From one bird to the next.”

Mr Benarroch’s previous role was as executive vice president for communications, advertising and partnerships at NBCUniversal.

He has also worked for rival social media giant Facebook.

Last week it was reported that Twitter may now be worth one third of what Mr Musk paid for it just seven months ago.

Financial services company Fidelity has reduced the market value of its equity stake in Twitter for a third time, now putting it at 6.55 million dollars (£5.28 million). That is down from the nearly 20 million dollars (£16.14 million) Fidelity valued its stake at in October.

It is unclear how Fidelity came up with its valuation figures, but as a public company it is required to provide investors with updates on its holdings.

Because Twitter is a private company now called X Holdings, information about its finances cannot be verified.

Mr Musk, who also owns SpaceX and Tesla, bought Twitter for 44 billion dollars (£35.5 billion) in October 2022.
