Driver of runaway electric car who claimed breaks weren't working is arrested

A Jaguar driver who claimed his brakes failed on a busy motorway has been arrested. The man was behind the wheel of a Jaguar I-PACE, which costs around £70,000 brand new, when he called 999 to tell police he couldn’t stop.

Police then rushed to the scene and escorted the vehicle as it sped onto the M57 and then onto the M62 eastbound through Warrington, Cheshire. The driver was then followed by police until his electric car battery ran out.

Last week, the terrified driver said he ‘thought he was going to die’.

He said: “I had no brakes and it just kept on speeding me up. I thought I was going to die, or I’m going to crash into somebody else.”

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed a 31-year-old man had been arrested in relation to the incident, which happened on March 6.

They said: “A man has been arrested in relation to an incident on the M62 on March 6 when officers from the force roads policing unit were called to help stop a vehicle safely.

“A 31-year-old man from Bolton has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and causing a public nuisance.”

A spokesperson for Jaguar Land Rover said last week that a ‘full review is underway’ to determine what happened.

They said: “Following the incident involving a Jaguar I-PACE on the M62 on the afternoon of 6th March, we are looking into this matter with urgency.

“A full review is underway to determine the cause of this incident, which is still yet to be established.

“The safety of our clients and vehicles is JLR’s highest priority.”
