Donald Trump to be indicted and end life ‘behind bars’, Democrat claims

Donald Trump is primed to be indicted and end his life “behind bars”, a Democrat has claimed. The January 6th Committee has recommended the Department of Justice indict the former President on four criminal charges over the Capitol riots in 2021.

Now Representative Jamie Raskin, Maryland Democrat who served on the House select committee, said Mr Trump will likely go to jail for the rest of his life.

Speaking on Yahoo! News’ Skullduggery podcast on Christmas Eve, the Democratic lawmaker said he “really would be surprised” if Attorney General Merrick Garland did not indict Trump for his alleged role in the riot.

He added that “it’s so clear” that the ex-President intended to “interfere” with the election certification.

“I do think it’s very, very important that we establish that it’s not just foot soldiers, but kingpins who are prosecuted,” Mr Raskin said.

“And it’s just wrong to send hundreds of foot soldiers to jail and leave the very clear kingpin unprosecuted.”

He added that Mr Trump could spend the rest of the life in prison if he’s convicted on January 6 charges, saying: “There’s just deep culpability from the very beginning in everything that Donald Trump did.

“I’m very serious about him facing the consequences and paying for the cost of his action.

“He could spend the remaining days of his misanthropic life behind bars, presumably with Secret Service agents.”

Mr Trump lambasted the United States House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack, after they recommended the Justice Department pursue criminal charges against the former President.

“These are sick people”, he said in a Truth Social video clip.

“These are Marxists. And they’re very dangerous and very bad people.”

He also said in the video that “the events of January 6 were not an insurrection”, insisting they were instead “a protest that got tragically out of control.”

He said the committee “did not produce a single shred of evidence that I in any way intended or wanted violence at our Capitol”, and claimed it does “not exist because the claim is baseless and a monstrous lie”.

The committee said that its conclusion was that “the central cause of January 6th was one man, former President Donald Trump, whom many others followed”.

“None of the events of January 6th would have happened without him,” they added.

Mr Raskin also told the podcast he believes the panel was “cautious and conservative” in the criminal referrals against Trump.

Those charges included: inciting an insurrection, obstruction of Congress, conspiracy to defraud the United States, and conspiracy to make a false statement.

The Department of Justice does not have to act upon the referrals, and Mr Trump has not been charged with a crime.
